Multi van insurance

Many types of businesses use vans to transport goods and deliver services. Whatever you are using your vans for, you may not need to insure them separately. In fact, it’s sometimes significantly cheaper for companies with three or more vans to take out a multi-van insurance policy. We take a look at multi-van insurance and how it could save you money.

What is multi-van insurance?

Multi-van insurance, sometimes known as fleet cover, differs from conventional van insurance policies because it covers three or more vehicles and multiple drivers. This means you can insure many vehicles under one policy with a single renewal date. It can save you both time and money, as well as the hassle of multiple policy renewals!

Multi-van insurance can save you lots of money. This is usually due to the incentives insurers offer to multi-van customers as a thank you for remaining loyal and insuring all your vehicles through them.

The number of vehicles you can cover under one policy will vary amongst providers so make sure you read the fine print of the policy.

Can multi-van insurance save me money?

Often, multi-van insurance works out cheaper thanks to discounts offered by insurance companies. However, this is not always the case.

The premium you pay depends on the type of vehicles you are covering and who is driving them. If you are the only driver then it’s likely to be significantly cheaper to take out a multi-van policy.

However, if you take on a young, inexperienced driver then including them on your multi-van insurance can significantly raise your premium costs.

Insuring a younger driver does not mean multi-van insurance will be more expensive as a conventional policy covering just the young driver will be very expensive.

It’s important to compare van insurance policies before making a decision. Comparing multi-van alongside conventional insurance policies for all drivers and vehicles will help you save money. usave can help you with your van insurance search, simply fill in a few details and we’ll give you quotes from numerous providers for you to compare.

Can anyone drive on multi-van insurance?

It’s up to you who you insure on your multi-van insurance cover.

Including young and inexperienced drivers, or someone with a driving conviction, can cause your multi-van insurance premiums to shoot up.

Drivers with several years no claims discounts can help lower the cost of cover for everyone on your policy.

Any driver cover will give you more flexibility and a smoother administration process because you don’t have to add and remove names - but it also tends to be more expensive. This is because your insurer does not have any information about your drivers, making any driver cover a greater risk for them.

Consider who will be driving your vans before you choose what type of multi-van insurance is best.

How your van might affect your premiums

As with all car insurance, the vehicle you drive affects the premiums you pay.

There are 20 van insurance groups labelled 1-20 and different models of vans are assigned to each category. Group 1 is the cheapest to insure, group 20 is the most expensive.

If you can be flexible about the vans you are driving, and want to keep your premiums low, choosing vans from lower insurance groups can help keep your costs down.

If your fleet is made up of different makes and models it may be worth comparing the price of conventional cover for the more costly vehicles separately so that you don’t raise the cost of your multi-van insurance policy.

How to find the right policy

It’s important to think about the type and level of cover you need when looking for multi-van insurance. Comparing van insurance can help you decide on your needs.

When searching, bear in mind:

  • Level of cover: Consider whether you want fully comprehensive, third party fire and theft, or third party only cover for your fleet.
  • Cover options: Work out what protection your vans need, for example whether you will need a replacement vehicle, breakdown or overseas cover, and does your insurer offer these?
  • Van usage: Look for a policy that covers the way you use your vans. Be aware that not all insurers cover vans used for haulage or courier services
  • Multiple drivers: How many drivers do you have for the same van? If you have multiple drivers for one vehicle you policy will need multiple driver cover.

Once you’ve decided what your multi-van insurance needs to cover, compare van insurance policies to find the best value for money available.
